Frequently Asked Questions
The structure of the course we provide means that it is equally suitable for candidates with no previous knowledge as well as those with some electrical or mechanical background wishing to gain specific knowledge relating to appliance repair.
If fact from experience we find that those with little or no background in the service sector often make the best candidates as they do not bring with them any previous potentially bad working practices they have picked up from others.
Those attending our training courses do not need to have any formal qualification or be from an engineering background all you need is a basis understanding tools and their use – most ‘DIYers’ and practical people possess these basic skills and further guidance and training on these and other items is part of the training we provide..
During the course you will gain the knowledge and extensive practical application of how these basic tools are used in respect of domestic appliance repair and servicing.
With this in mind the main criteria for any candidate is their willingness to learn a varied and interesting range of new skills and for the duration of the course we provide all tools and test equipment for the duration of the course.
Clothing wise it is really up to the individual (or company sending them) to choose what they wear but you should bear in mind that you will be working on a wide range of appliances which may entail getting clothing a little dirty at times.
Although we don’t insist on any prior study many of our candidates have said that reading the series of books Graham wrote for Haynes Publishing (famous for their Car Manuals) greatly assisted them. However, like many bookshops we are also currently out of stock of the books and it is unlikely that Haynes will be carrying out a reprint.
If you want to read them prior to attending the course but are unable to purchase them you could try your local library as I believe that they are a popular lending items.
The Haynes titles are – The Washing Machine Manual ISBN: 1 85960 327 0, The Combined Washer Drier & Tumbledrier Manual ISBN 1 85960 3328 9, The Dishwasher Manual ISBN 1 85960 329 7 (I believe Haynes may still have stock of this item on their UK website) and finally the Home Electrical Appliance Manual ISBN 1 85960 329 7.
As most practical people are not too keen on paperwork we provide a comprehensive 400 page course hand-out for each candidate which they used during the course in which they can if they wish to do so make their own notes as it is theirs to keep after the course as reference material.
The cost of our in-depth 10 day training course is still only £795 for the full 10 days of training. No VAT to pay so the price is what you will pay.
We also provide in-company training courses for existing business or recycling/reuse project that need more than six candidates to be trained in one session please see here.
Our Training Centre is located in Barnsley just off Junction 37 of the M1 in the middle of the UK and as such is easily accessible by road.
There are also excellent rail links to Barnsley and the Centre is close to the three main airport in the North of England, Manchester, Leeds Bradford and Doncaster Sheffield (Robin Hood Airport).
Currently the answer to this question is ‘No’ due to the volume, size and weight of appliances our candidates work on during the their time with us.
All training is carried out at our training venue in Barnsley South Yorkshire (details of which can be found in the information pack you will receive by email and in the post).

Dixon Training is an ‘Equal Opportunity’ training provider and as such welcomes all candidates. We are pleased to say that over the years we have trained many women from various parts of the country that have gained employment within the sector or set up their own businesses.
The ones that spring to mind are a young woman called Christine who now works for an independent service company who rate her very highly, another called Ann who became the manager of an appliance recycling enterprise and a single parent called Shelley who set up her own business on the out skirts of London with the intention of running the business around school times etc. Sadly having experience of women’s refuges part of her business plan was to turn this to her advantage realising that there was an untapped market where male engineers were simply not welcome. Recently we have trained a young lady called Fiona who had gas boiler installation skills and wanted to add domestics appliance repair to enable her to set up her own business. There have been many others but once trained only a few candidates bother to let us know where they settle.
Interestingly several companies at the tradeshows we attend have expressed interest in employing female engineering staff but as is common in many businesses these days they tend to wait and see who responds to job vacancies as opposed to actively seeking female staff – those that we know have employed them have said they are extremely pleased and will consider employing more.
